Some attorneys spend years mapping out their path to family law. Hannah Kingery, a South Carolina family law attorney, took a different route that turned out to be exactly the right one.

Originally from Teutopolis, Illinois, Hannah earned her Bachelor’s in finance from Southern Illinois University (SIU), and later, her law degree from SIU Simmons Law School. What followed next was a chance taken and an opportunity seized that would change the trajectory of her career.

 

What inspired you to pursue a career in family law?

“It was being with Anne Frances, actually. I wanted to work in a supportive environment. I wanted to find a place I could continue to learn and grow.”

Inspired by Anne Frances, Hannah wrote a letter to Bleecker Family Law’s founder expressing her interest in working with her one day. After just two weeks as a summer law clerk, Hannah knew she had found exactly where she needed to be.

 

What does a “good day” look like? What motivates you?

Hannah’s favorite days are those that keep her on the move. Mornings start with full-firm meetings. Attorneys share challenges, discuss cases and collaborate. It is this team communication that ensures Bleecker clients truly receive full-team support, and that sense of community within the firm is one of Hannah’s favorite aspects.

“The relationships our attorneys build are one of my favorite parts of my work. 

From there, no two days are alike. Each case brings unique challenges and triumphs for her, her team and her clients, and the relationships built throughout that process are what keep her grounded. In a field where people come to you in some of the hardest moments of their lives, Hannah’s goal is to be a steady presence others can rely on.

“Family court is not easy for anyone, but I want my clients to leave consultations (and every session) feeling confident they have found someone they can trust and work with, someone who has their best interests at heart.”

 

What is the most common advice you give to your clients?

Clients also play a role in the success of their cases. Hannah recommends one thing above all: “Take care of yourself and be honest with yourself and with your legal team.” While simple, those two things can make all the difference in the middle of a difficult process.

 

What motivates you in work and in life?

Hannah’s drive runs deep. She is focused on continuous improvement both professionally and personally. She is always pushing to be a better attorney than she was the year before. Personally, she draws strength from her family. As the oldest of six children  (five sisters and one brother), she has long understood what it means to show up for the people who need you.

Outside the office, you will find her walking downtown, grabbing coffee or out at Sullivan’s Island with her rescue pup, Dolly. She has built a life in Charleston and made it home. Now, Hannah is using her skills and drive to help support the members of her community.
